Third Grade Art
Third graders studied rocks and minerals in Studio Art and Science classes. They found that rocks are identified by color, shape, luster, and hardness. The students closely observed rocks and made notations about their observations.
The students learned about the rock cycle and sang the Three Rock Rap.
Mr. Comerford's 3 Rock Rap.
Rocks are able to change form from igneous to metamorphic and sedimentary rock. The rocks can move from one form to another and back again. The rocks do not necessarily move around the cycle in a specific order.
Rocks and minerals are used commonly in everyday life. Artists use rocks and minerals as pigments when they paint, as gems in jewelry, as marble or granite for sculptures.
Third graders painted a rock. They were inspired by the shape of the rock and artwork created by other artists such as Andy
Goldsworthy.
Our students recycled rocks by using plastic bottles, plastic bottle lids, soda cans and metal scraps to imaginatively create some art.
